Genre

Noise

Roots in early-20th-century futurism; modern noise scenes formed in the late 1970s and 1980s, especially Japan's Kansai region (Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe), plus the US and Europe; a strong US scene followed in the 2000s.

About Noise

Music that uses sound normally treated as unwanted, such as feedback, distortion, static and raw electronics, as its main material, usually with little or no melody, harmony or steady rhythm. Harsh noise piles these into dense, extremely loud walls of sound, and live shows are often short, physical and confrontational. It sits at the extreme edge of experimental and industrial music.
