Industrial / EBM

Mid-1970s UK, US and Germany (the term came from Monte Cazazza and Throbbing Gristle's Industrial Records, 1976); EBM in early-1980s West Germany and Belgium; industrial rock and metal broke into the mainstream in the late 1980s and 1990s.

About Industrial / EBM

Industrial music began as confrontational art made from tape loops, harsh percussion, distorted voices, feedback and homemade or modified instruments. Electronic body music (EBM) turned that toward the dancefloor with sequenced basslines, programmed 4/4 beats, shouted vocals and machine-like samples. Later industrial rock and metal fused the sound with guitars and reached arena audiences.
