Genre

Dark ambient / drone

Mid-1980s Europe, growing out of industrial music (first called "ambient industrial"); the name was attached in the early 1990s to Sweden's Cold Meat Industry roster; drone metal came out of 1990s Washington State.

About Dark ambient / drone

Slow, mostly beatless music built from evolving dissonant drones, low rumbles and processed field recordings that are often stretched until the source is unrecognisable. Some artists add choirs, gongs or ritual percussion. The mood is isolation, dread and vast empty space. Drone and drone metal push the same idea through sustained, very loud, very low tones.
