Genre

Trashwave

2010s internet underground; the phonk side traces to Memphis and Houston rap, revived online in the early 2010s, with drift phonk emerging in Russia in the late 2010s.

About Trashwave

An informal underground tag rather than a documented genre: in dark-electronic circles it is used for deliberately rough, lo-fi and distorted takes on witch house, wave and trap, often blown out on purpose. It overlaps heavily with phonk, which grew out of 1990s Memphis rap tapes and chopped-and-screwed Houston production, with dark samples, heavy 808s and cowbells. Because no reputable source defines the term, treat this entry as a description of how the scene uses it.
